ISIS

Isis is one of the great Egyptian Mother goddesses.

In the Egyptian tradition, Isis is the mother and wife, the matron of arts and sciences and the friend of the slaves and downtrodden, as well as the inspirer of artisans and poets.

Her name means literally "She of the throne". She was said to have been the first daughter of Geb, the god of the earth, and Nut, the goddess of the Overreaching Sky. The Horned Crown (the disk with horns on either side) was not originally her symbol, but was a emblem later ascribed to Isis from the Great Mother Goddess, Hathor.

In later myths, Isis gave birth to Horus, the god who watched over the Pharos. Isis was married to her brother, Orisis, who was slain by Seth. Isis gathered the pieces of Orisis' body (except the phallus which was eaten by a crocodile) and re-joined them to bring him back to life to act out the death and resurrection cycle common to Goddess worship.

Isis was so loved in the ancient world that she withstood the advance of Christianity, and only the worship of Mary the Virgin finally supplanted her.
